چکیده

L ike a miniature Segway with eyes, a robot built from 3D printed plastic does laps around a cubicle here at Brain Corporation, having learned in a matter of minutes to avoid bumping into walls as it roams. As eyeRover scoots away, Peter O'Connor, a staff scientist at the robotics software company, steps into its route. Using a remote control unit, he briefly takes control of the foot-tall robot and steers it around his feet, much as a parent might help a toddler learn to avoid a coffee table. On the next lap, eyeRover whisks around the obstacle all by itself. EyeRover may look like a toy, but it's packed with some of the most advanced robotic technology ever devised, including a prototype computing platform designed to emulate the human brain. Unlike conventional computer chips and software, which execute a linear sequence of tasks, this new approach—called neuromorphic computing—carries out processing and memory tasks simultaneously, just as our brains do for complex tasks such as vision and hearing. Many researchers believe that neuro-morphic computing is at the threshold Minds of their own Novel neuromorphic chips and software should provide robots with unrivaled perceptual skills EyeRover negotiates obstacles, guided by software that emulates the brain.

Theory of Mind for you, and for me: behavioral and neural similarities and differences in thinking about beliefs of the self and other

Do we have privileged access to our own mental states, or do we use the same mechanism for thinking about our own minds as we do for thinking about the minds of others? This study featured a task that either induced true and false beliefs in participants or allowed participants to witness another person’s true and false beliefs. Later we measured participants’ ability to recall their own and ot...

Self-ascriptions of Belief and Transparency

The access that we have to the contents of our own minds, in contrast with the access that we have to the minds of others, has three main prima facie features. First, it is authoritative: we have a special authority upon what happens in our own minds, in the sense that if we think that we are in a certain mental state it seems that we cannot be challenged. We can indeed make mistakes: our menta...

The Role of Gesture in Learning: Do Children Use Their Hands to Change Their Minds?

Adding gesture to spoken instructions makes those instructions more effective. The question we ask here is why. A group of 49 third and fourth grade children were given instruction in mathematical equivalence with gesture or without it. Children given instruction that included a correct problem-solving strategy in gesture were significantly more likely to produce that strategy in their own gest...

Response to Vollmer’s Review of Minds and Molecules*

I present a response to Vollmer’s review of the book Of Minds and Molecules, and especially her comments on my own article therein. This provides an opportunity to discuss two central ideas in the philosophy of chemistry. These are the distinction between elements as simple substances (element-1) and elements as basic substances (element-2) and Paneth’s proposed intermediate position for philos...

How do we know the minds of others? Domain-specificity, simulation, and enactive social cognition.

In what ways, and to what extent, is social cognition distinguished from cognition in general? And how do data from cognitive neuroscience speak to this question? I review recent findings that argue social cognition may indeed be specialized, and at multiple levels. One particularly interesting respect in which social cognition differs from the rest of cognition is in its close interaction with...

Draft of Talk; Please Do Not Quote

As commonsense would have it, dogs, cats, elephants, dolphins, chimps, and many other species of nonhuman animals are minded creatures: they can feel hunger, thirst, fatigue, agitation, pain and pleasure; they can try or want to do things; they can be startled, surprised, puzzled, or scared by this or that; they can have more or less specific interests, wants, and expectations; and, though lang...
